State Unveils Employee Stock Program

By Devon Scott 5/8/2008

It’s a program to encourage Hoosier businesses to give their employees a slice of the pie. State Treasurer Richard Mourdock unveiled the IEI on Thursday – Indiana’s employee stock ownership program (or ESOP) initiative.

About 200 companies in Indiana let their employees have a piece of ownership. Mourdock is asking banks across the state to get involved, and his office is investing $50 million into the effort. The goal is to get more companies to keep business and jobs in the Hoosier state.

City Takes Hard Look at Violence Around Downtown Bar
by Devon Scott
8/8/2006

The increase in violence in Marion County has caused the city and police to take a second look at a downtown bar, where one of the recent murders and other shootings have occurred.

The Vault at 120 E. Market is less than two blocks away from police headquarters, but police say they’ve made 10 runs for problems inside the business, and have had other reports of vandalism and thefts from cars in the area since the business opened in May 2005.

Early Saturday, 26-year-old Maurice White was shot to death in the alley behind the Vault. Afterward, the owner agreed to keep the bar closed for the rest of the weekend.

The business and problems surrounding it have caught the attention of city officials, but Mayor Peterson says he’s not ready to pass judgment on the Vault just yet.

“I will say this — there’s an unholy alliance among guns, liquor, and late hours,” Peterson told WIBC’s Devon Scott.

And, the mayor says the city takes a strong stand against establishments that become havens for crime and blight. When deemed necessary, he says the city government will go after a bar’s liquor license to shut it down.

The Vault’s owners have taken some steps to control their patrons. Three off-duty IPD officers work security there on weekend nights, and there are reports the bar has purchased an electronic identification system that scans drivers’ licenses to compare to a list of people who are banned from the business.

But Peterson says he’s fed up with any place that is a focus for violence.

“I’m sick and tired of hearing about bar fights resulting not in fisticuffs like they did 10 or 20 years ago, but in shootings time after time after time,” he says.

Peterson says the violence surrounding several bars in the city may lead to changes in city ordinances about hours of operation or tougher penalties for violence in and around nightclubs.
